As one of the signatories of the Business Environment Council Low Carbon Charter, Shiu Wing Steel is committed to developing renewable energy through the installation of large-scale solar panels. Moreover, Shiu Wing Steel has become the first enterprise to achieve Platinum level in reinforcing bars and cut and bent products under the Green Product Certification scheme by the Hong Kong Green Building Council, in its effort to continuously improve the sustainability performance of its products.
Shiu Wing’s green rebars, and subsequently Cut-and-Bent products, are manufactured from Electric Arc Furnaces, which produce 50% less carbon than the conventional Blast Furnace (BF)/Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). Usage of EAF rebars reduce 15-25% of embodied carbon in the concrete structure.
Shiu Wing’s Cut-n-Bent center prefabricating rebar products in a factory-like setting helps enhance productivity, uplift built quality, improve construction safety and promote environmental performance. Our automated process also supports innovative BIM solutions. A reliable quality control system enables product traceability and documentation in compliance with DEVB TC(W) No. 10/2018 and BD APP-45 Apr2019, for government and non-government projects, satisfying the requirement of qualified site supervision in sampling, Independent Audit Team (IAT), as well as HOKLAS accredited laboratory tests.
The ‘Survey on Green Reinforcing Steel Supply and Use in Construction Sector of Hong Kong’ conducted by The City University of Hong Kong, in 2021, has interviewed tens of construction-related stakeholders. The study outcomes have revealed the use of off-site prefabricated CnB products becoming a contractual requirement, this construction practice was enhanced by the CITF Cash Rebate. Most stakeholders have admitted that traceability, cost-saving, delivery, precision, labor and site space, lessen weather effect, productivity, and flexibility are beneficial from this practice, too.
As a rebar manufacturer and supplier, Shiu Wing Steel has taken the initiative to obtain the first CIC Green Product Certification for two rebars and two Cut-n-bent products - Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) products with 97% recycling content – and they are awarded with ‘Platinum’ rated certifications. These green certified material helps earn credits and achieve higher rating for green building projects.

As part of its decarbonisation effort, Shiu Wing has recently installed a 1.3 MW solar photovoltaic systems at its Tuen Mun steel mill, the largest solar PV system built on a single roof in Hong Kong. Together with another 80kW PV system on the office building rooftop, Shiu Wing has installed a total of 2,660 PV panels, generating 1,500,000 kWh annually. This is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 330 Hong Kong households or planting 25,438 trees. Approximately 555,000 kilograms of carbon emission can be effectively reduced from the utility per year.
